The repaired MD-9600 connected to my duplex MMDVM hotspot running PI-STAR.
In March 26 I purchased a TYT MD-9600 DMR mobile radio sold as 'For parts or not working' from an Ebay seller in the UK. When it arrived a few days later and I had connected it up to my power supply it didn't come as a complete surprise that it appeared to be DOA. I connected up a programming lead hoping that it might be a software issue however that just further confirmed that I had bought a dud.
Either the previous owner had reversed the power supply polarity by accident or the voltage from the power supply had exceeded the maximum rating for the transceiver. The first thing I noticed was a bulge in EC1001 - 470uF/25V and marks on the underside of the lid where 'magic smoke' had escaped from the capacitor. I managed to find a MD-9600 circuit diagram online which helped immeasurably in repairing the transceiver. I soon discovered that anything that was polarity conscious and directly connected to the supply line 'BAT_VCC' and 'SW_VCC' was potentially vulnerable.
The following components were found to be faulty and were replaced in the order they appear, EC1001 - 470uF/25V & Q1001 - 2SJ377 (obsolete); U1002 - LM2734X; U203 - LA4425A (obsolete), and finally the most expensive item Q505 - RD70HVF1.
This is the first and possibly the last MD-9600 I am going to repair.
